I thought I would take a moment and make a quick post about Jules de Balincourt. Jules de Balincourt’s I Infect You, You Infect Me posits the tensions of abstract painting as a ground for warfare. Flanked on either side by slogans in hand rendered techno font, De Balincourt’s composition is unleashed with parodic authoritarianism. Rendered with the hard edged graphics of primitive special effects, coloured bands explode towards each other, colliding in the centre in a ball of spindly chaos. With its humble aesthetics, De Balincourt’s painting portrays aggression with a pathetic sympathy, outlining the unspoken rules of basic human interaction.

The Visual Music of Mary Ellen Bute…. Her work is pretty close to amazing. Bute was a pioneer and an innovative female filmmaker and animator whose work is still not widely known. Much of her early films function a bit like music videos. She called them “visual music” - she creates graphics through analog means in order to accompany a piece of music. I just found out…just now…that a piece I co-directed at Shilo went on to make the shortlist at the Cannes Lions Film Festival! Im kind of speachless. It is a PSA piece showing the world’s support for the situation in Burma. If youd like to see it, Ive provided a link here.

These are shots from our pass it on project. For those of you who havent heard of PSST…heres a link. We were on our marry way towards the completion of our PSST3 piece. It was going to be “end all” I tell ya. However, we ran into rough waters as a member of our group (the artist ahead of us) dropped out. Our idea had to do several 180s (maybe a 720 or something) in order to facilitate this issue. The final piece will have elements of our past idea but, be completely different storywise. Whatevs….
This video needs no explanation…Other than the fact that it most definitely belongs in a museum. Think long and hard about this one.

So, I had this idea to make an “art piece.” An….”installation.” The piece was going to be composed of two vintage television sets…one on top of the other. There would be a video playing on each in which hands would appear to interact with each other…and reach for each other, to make a long story short. Never happened. Maybe one day.
